CrossFit is Compassion

whatsapp-image-2016-12-02-at-2-06-06-pmWhat does CrossFit mean to me? All the great things you hear about community and friendship are true. It’s a great way to get fit and have fun doing it. To me it goes beyond that. To me CrossFit is about love and compassion.

I’ve had a tough few months and believe me I know it could be worse so this is certainly not a pity party.

My family and friends have been great at providing support, as you’d expect.

It’s what has happened at my other family, my CrossFit family that has truly blown me away.

I have a life long friend who coaches me. Not a day has gone by since 1 July 2016 that he has not phoned me or sent me a message to see how I’m doing and how my situation is developing. He has been a pillar of strength and an incredible sounding board. Not because he has to. He does it because beneath his tough, grumpy shell, he is compassionate. He does it because he cares.

The coaches of my box know that I have had no income. They then decided that they should upgrade their flooring and stock up on some equipment and use me as their supplier. They didn’t need to do this but chose to because they too are compassionate. They did it because they see one of their own in a tough situation and they just want to help. They did it because they care.

My 4 year old daughter broke her leg in a freak accident and I chatted to some friends about it. Within hours I had a call from a member at our box. He just happens to be an undercover orthopaedic surgeon. He set my daughters leg into a cast and removed it a month later and refused to charge me. He can’t get anything from me. He barely even knows me. He doesn’t expect anything in return. He did it because he cares.

We use our sessions to get fit and healthy but also to vent, to listen, and to bond.

2 years ago I didn’t know most of these folks. They didn’t know me either. There is so much to be said about a community that pulls together in such a short space of time and shows this amount of love and compassion.screen-shot-2016-12-02-at-14-16-44

I’m truly grateful for the people I “do CrossFit” with.

Love
